  1. produce an effect . So was the TV quiz show. But with the TV 
  2. effect there is deep audience participation . Movie and drama do 
  3. not permit as much participation as that afforded by the 
  4. mosaic mesh of the TV image. So great was the audience 
  5. participation in the quiz shows that the directors of the show 
  6. were prosecuted as con men. Moreover, press and radio ad 
  7. interests, bitter about the success of the new TV medium, were 
  8. delighted to lacerate the flesh of their rivals. Of course the 
  9. riggers had been blithely unaware of the nature of their 
  10. medium, and had given it the movie treatment of intense 
  11. realism, instead of the softer mythic focus proper to TV. 
  12. Charles Van Doren merely got clobbered as an innocent 
  13. bystander, and the whole investigation elicited no insight into 
  14. the nature or effects of the TV medium. Regrettably, it simply 
  15. provided a field day for the earnest moralizers. A moral point of 
  16. view too often serves as a substitute for understanding in
